For the seventh straight month, PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in the United States, edging out its competition in the form of Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U for the month of July, 2014. This news, which comes from the NPD Group, comes on the heels of Sony's announcement thatPlayStation 4 has sold over 10 million units in about nine months' time.
As far as next-gen software sales are considered, Sony claims it won the race "by a considerable margin." The Last of Us: Remastered -- a game we gave a 10 to -- was the best-selling overall game, according to Sony, and PS4 software "accounted for more than half of total next generation software sales."
If you combine PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 hardware sales, PlayStation outsold the Xbox brand when considering both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Here are the top 10 software sales for the US for the month of July, 2014. As always, remember that the platforms listed next to each title are in order of best-selling SKU to worst:
1.) The Last of Us (PS4, PS3)2.) Minecraft (360, PS3)3.) FIFA 14 (360, PS4, XBO, PS3, PSV)4.) Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, XBO, PC)5.) Mario Kart 8 (NWU)6.) Call of Duty: Ghosts (XBO, 360, PS4, PS3, NWU, PC)7.) Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)8.) Sniper Elite III (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)9.) NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, PC)10.) Nintendo also had a strong month on the back of its acclaimed racer Mario Kart 8, a game we adored. Mario Kart 8 broke the 1 million sold mark in the US, becoming the second Wii U game to do so (New Super Mario Bros. U did some time ago, currently sitting at 1.69 million). "Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform," according to Nintendo. "Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013."
Nintendo also revealed that nine separate 3DS games have surpassed a million copies sold in the US: Mario Kart 7 (3.48 million), Super Mario 3D Land (3.09 million), New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2.28 million), Pokémon X (2.10 million), Pokémon Y (2.01 milion), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (1.39 million), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (1.36 million), Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (1.33 million), and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (1.09 million).
According to NPD, "Hardware sales doubled in July 2014 (vs. July 2013), stemming from growth in eighth generation console sales which offset declines in seventh generation console and portable hardware." If you take the first nine months of PS4 and Xbox One being on the market, and compa
