Sony Confirms PlayStation 2 Games on PlayStation 4

In a short email conversation with WIRED, a Sony representative confirms that PlayStation 2 titles are coming to PlayStation 4. First few games of said PS2 games are the just released Star Wars games, that are using the emulation technology the PS4 is capable of, which Sony never really mentioned before. Apparently, with firmware update to 3.0, this technology has been secretly implemented to the system.

The Sony representative stated in said email that “we are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

The PS4 was the only Sony console that came without any backwards compatibility, the PS2 could read PS One CDs, the early versions of the PS3 were able to play PS2 games, later PS One and 2 Classics as well as PSP games were added to the PS Store to play on PS3 and PS Vita. Until now, only remastered versions of older games came to the PS4.

But gamers are hungry for PS2 titles as that might have been the greatest Sony console with one of the best, if not the best, library of games. And what exactly that would mean for the PlayStation 4 is crystal clear; the library would instantly grow to something significantly better. And not only does the PS4 emulate this game but also graphics and perfomance are improved.

If and how that really works out in the end is not clear as of today. Will you be able to put your old PS2 discs into the PS4 and play these old gems? Or will these PS2 classics only come to the PS Store? Let's find out.

JerriKoe - Game on!
